The system, which will be part of InToTidal project, arrived at Hatston Pier in Kirkwall and is now planned for installation at EMEC’s Fall of Warness grid-connected tidal test site.
Tocardo said that the deployment marks the start of Tocardo’s planned 20-year commercial demonstration project at the test site.
Tocardo Tidal Power CEO Hans van Breugel said that the work at EMEC is an important step in de-risking and improving its offshore tidal power technology.
“Tocardo’s benchmark is to produce energy at the cost of offshore wind in the near future. To be able to achieve this, the tidal energy sector needs to be enabled to increase the installed volume of equipment.”
“Tocardo is ready to become one of the larger inward investment companies into the marine energy sector, with a strong operational and production base in Scotland and Wales.”
The firm is planning for next installation at the FORCE and Petit Passage locations in Canada.
Other participants in the project include Leask Marine and French research institute Ifremer.
With the installation at EMEC’s site, Tocardo expects to roll-out its generic solution for tidal energy production.
