Under this program, Avni Energy Solution, a Tirupati-based company, has supplied and installed energy-efficient 72W LED street lights, featuring Cree XLamp LEDs along the city’s main thoroughfares that are estimated to yield energy savings of more than 70% compared to traditional sodium vapor street lighting.

Through the participation in the program, Tirupati Municipal Corporation expects a monthly savings of 6,187 units of electricity, which is equivalent to $6,500 annually.

The Cree LED City initiative is an expanding community of government and industry parties who work towards the deployment and evaluation of LED lighting technology across the full range of municipal infrastructure.

According to the US Department of Energy, lighting accounts for 22% of electricity used in the US. The program is aimed at saving energy, protecting the environment and reducing maintenance by switching to energy efficient LED lighting.

P Reddy, commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Tirupati, said: “Devendra Talkies and Tilak represent two of our city’s most highly trafficked roads, making proper illumination is essential. With thousands of people enjoying our city each day, LED lighting provided a way to reduce costs associated with the energy use and maintenance of illuminated roadways.”
