In 2008, China’s three major companies, Guodian, Datang, and Huaneng combinely emitted more than the UK’s total emissions, during the same time frame.
According to Greenpeace, China’s 60% of the total electricity needs are provided by its top ten companies, which heavily depend on coal. Presently Greenpeace requests the companies to help move China away from coal and reduce CO2 emissions by developing renewable energy and aggressively improving energy efficiency.
The report states that: “The Chinese electricity sector has to grasp this historical opportunity and add to China’s efforts to be part of an ambitious climate deal in Copenhagen in December. In an increasingly carbon constrained world, countries that are heavily dependent on coal leave themselves exposed to great risks.”
