The UK Department of Energy has granted permission for the building of three gas fired combined heat and power stations at Carrington in Greater Manchester, Northfleet in Kent and Rugby in Warwickshire. The 60 MW Carrington plant is to supply the heat and electricity needs of the Montell Polyolefins plant, the 110 MW Northfleet station will supply the Kimberley-Clark paper mill in the town and the14 MW Rugby power station will supply heat and electricity to the Rugby Cement works at South Ferriby in Lincolnshire. The announcements were described by Energy minister Helen Liddell as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to promoting combined heat and power projects as a means of helping to reduce carbon emissions in line with its obligations as a signatory to the Kyoto agreement.
