ABB has completed a 1040km, 3000MW HVDC link connected China's Three Gorges hydro project to the demand centre in Shanghai.

The project was completed in less than 30 months and delivered six months ahead of schedule, ABB said.

The US$900M line runs from the Huaxin HVDC receiver station on the outskirts of Shanghai, China’s largest city to the Three Gorges hydro power plant.

Built on behalf of State Grid Corp, the line is the country’s longest HVDC transmission link to date. In June 2004 ABB installed a 940km, 3000 MW Three Gorges to Guangdong power link.

On completion in 2009, the Three Gorges will be the world’s largest hydro power plant generating 18,200MW.
