XINHUA NEWS AGENCY has reported that China National Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation has won a US$224M contract for the construction of the Tekeze dam and hydroelectric project, on the Tekeze river – a tributary of the Nile, in Ethiopia.

Xinhua said the Chinese company out-bid companies from Germany, Italy and Japan for the work.

China National Water Resources is associated with the construction of the Three Gorges dam. The Tekeze, a 185m high arch dam, will be 10m taller than Three Gorges but will have less electrical generating capacity.
