Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Electric and Joban Joint Power to form a consortium to develop two 540MW coal-fired power plants in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

Under the terms of the LoI, theFukushima Revitalization Power Consortium will develop the facilities featuring integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) units.

The IGCCs are designed to help reduce CO2 emissions by around 15%, compared to the new conventional coal fired plant.

Said to be the world’s most advanced coal-fired thermal power plantsm the facilities will be built at TEPCO’s Hirono thermal power station and Joban Joint Power’s Nakoso thermal power station.

The project will support the region with around 2,000 jobs during peak construction phase.
