Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) and Indian firm Hydel Engineering and Construction have signed a US$11.6M deal to rehabilitate Tedzani I and II hydro power plants.

Prolonged floods in December 2001 damaged intake screens and supporting structures at the plants and cost Escom 40MW of the system’s capacity.

Escom’s total generation capacity increased to 284MW in May 2001 following the commissioning of Kapichira hydro power plant in Chikwawa.

But the damage to Tedzani and the recent burning of equipment at Nkula B power plant has reduced that capacity to 224MW.
