South Korea’s state-run company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) said in a statement the shut down will not interfere with electricity production, and no radiation risks were reported.
An unnamed KHNP spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying that the reactor automatically shuts down if there are any signs of problems to protect and maintain overall safety.
" It will take some time to verify the exact cause of the shutdown," the spokesman added.
The incident is the first time in seven years the Westinghouse-designed reactor has shut down and marked 2014’s second nuclear reactor shutdown following one reported in late January, in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, Arirang News reports
South Korea has 23 nuclear reactors, six of which are currently offline with the latest shut down.
