Apart from relieving critical loading of the Kalwa-Salsette lines, the new lines are also expected to boost transmission for power import to Mumbai, Press Trust of India reports citing a company statement.
The commissioning represent a short term measure in response to Tata Power’s proposal to Maharashtra State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) and State Transmission Utility (STU) for transmission lines enhancement between Kalwa and Salsette, which are overloaded due to acute shortage of up to 500MW capacity generation from Trombay thermal power plant.
The Trombay plant remain underutilized since July 2013, due to unavailability of natural gas, increasing the need for power import from outside the city.
Tata Power Operations chief Ashok Sethi said, "Tata Power will continue to make all efforts that the Mumbai consumers are not adversely affected due to the acute shortage of natural gas to Trombay."
