Smith Bell Renewable Energy Corporation (SB Resco) has announced plans for a 12MW run-of-river hydro plant on the Dapitan river in Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines.

Power produced by the US$12M plant will be sold to the Zamboanga del Norte Electrical Co-operative. SB Resco vice president Ruth Owen said the Dapitan river has long been identified as a potential source of power by the Department of Energy, who had sought private sector participants a year ago.

SB Resco expressed interest in the project and, if feasibility studies prove the project viable, hope to begin operations at the site by 2003.

The project supports the provincial government’s plans of harnessing renewable energy sources to increase power supply availability, said the company.
