The company will construct the Droogfontein 2 solar facility, 20km south of Kimberly in Northern Cape province.
SunEdison Services will operate and maintain the facility, which will generate enough energy for about 45,000 households in South Africa.
The energy generated from the plant will be sold to South African national utility Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
SunEdison general manager for Africa Enrique Collado said: "Solar energy is cost competitive with fossil fuel energy, solar power plants can be brought on-line far more quickly than conventional power plants, and solar power plants are easily scalable, making them the perfect solution to help alleviate South Africa’s constrained power system.
"South Africa is one of the most attractive solar markets in the world, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Department of Energy in future rounds of the Renewable Energy IPP procurement program, which is expected to deliver an incremental 6.3 gigawatts of projects."
Under the IPP program, South Africa is planning to generate about 17,800MW of renewable energy by 2030 and reduce its reliance on fossil fuel.
SunEdison has to date developed and installed 130MW of utility scale solar power in South Africa.
