A memorandum of understanding has been signed to this effect between SunEdison and the Tamil Nadu state government.

The proposed 2GW projects form a part of the company’s strategy to develop 15.2GW of renewable energy in the country by 2022.

SunEdison Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa president Pashupathy Gopalan said: "SunEdison is dedicated to furthering India’s renewable energy program, and has committed to develop and construct 15.2 gigawatts of clean and cost effective wind and solar power projects in the country by 2022.

"With this memorandum of understanding, we are expressing our support for Tamil Nadu’s clean energy future, and are making progress towards our larger commitment."

SunEdison has selected Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Tiruchi and Perambalur as potential locations for the projects, The Hindu reported.

The company already started installing 200MW solar power projects.

Meanwhile, Indian multinational conglomerate Adani plans to invest close to INR200bn ($3bn) in Tamil Nadu.

Adani is also investing in port and non-renewable power projects such as thermal power projects in the state.

Earlier in January this year, SunEdison and Adani Enterprises announced plans to invest about $4bn in building a solar panel manufacturing facility in Gujarat, India.

The project, which will create 20,000 new jobs, is anticipated to take three to four years to complete.
