The development of the plant is said to be on back of an initiative lead by Petrobras in line with the Research and Development Program of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL).
Meanwhile, the construction of the 1.1MW plant in Alto do Rodrigues is scheduled to begin by the end of 2013. It is estimated to have an annual production rate of 1.65GWh, besides reducing emission of 380 tons of carbon.
In addition, the project also includes the construction of a 10 kW experimental facility at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) Department of Electrical Engineering’s Laboratory of Power Electronics and Renewable Energy.
SunEdison for EMEA, Latin America and North Asia general manager Pancho Perez stated that the company is looking forward to collaborate with Petrobras for this R&D project from ANEEL to facilitate solar energy development and PV industry growth in the country.
"This agreement is a demonstration of our commitment to the Brazilian market. We look forward to working with Petrobras and helping to diversify the energy mix in Brazil," added Perez.
Following the construction, SunEdison Renewable Operations Center is mandated to manage the operations of the plant, besides National Interconnected System (SIN) procuring the energy output.
