Both Statoil and PNE Wind have proposed the construction of large-scale offshore wind farms in the USA.
The firms have submitted unsolicited lease requests to the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to develop areas off the coasts of New York and Massachusetts. The requests combined propose the construction of 1-2 GW of capacity.
PNE Wind is proposing the construction of a 300-400 MW wind farm, known as Excelsior, off the coast of New York. BOEM said that it will determine if there is interest from other parties in developing this area before moving forward with the application.
BOEM says it has received requests from both PNE and Statoil for two areas off the coast of Massachusetts and that it will move to implement a competitive leasing process.
PNE has proposed two 400 MW projects off the Massachusetts coast, while Statoil has proposed an initial phase of 400-600 MW across the two areas. Both firms would use fixed foundations for their projects.
PNE said it would install approximately 30-50 wind turbine generators on fixed foundations at its proposed Excelsior site, which is off the coast of Long Island near the New York Wind Energy Area. It will continue to determine the viability of the site, it said.
The companies have proposed using turbines of around 8-12 MW capacity at their projects.
