Upon completion, the Uma Oya project will add 92 MW of power to the national grid and irrigate 5,000 hectares of agricultural land. The project is expected to cost $16 billion. The Sri Lankan government is financing the project with $450 million from Iran.
The 35MW capacity Broadlands Hydropower Project is a run–of–river (ROR) type development in the Kelani River, in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
These four power plants are the final medium-scale hydro power plants planned to be constructed in the country.
In 2006, the Cabinet has given its approval for development of four hydropower projects under Mahinda Chintanaya manifesto.
