The grant will be directed towards developing Heat Mirror low-emissivity and solar-reflective films and multi-cavity, suspended-film insulating glass technology that will help in commercialization of ‘super-insulating’ R-10 windows.
Heat Mirror insulating glass consists of multi-cavities that suspend one or more low-emissivity and solar-reflective Heat Mirror films inside an insulating glass unit to create two, three or even four insulating cavities and Heat Mirror suspended film technology integrates film-based and glass-based technologies to create ‘super glass’ that enables R-10 windows.
According to DOE, the nation’s 114 million homes and 74 million square feet of commercial floor space account for 40% of US total energy consumption and 39% of total carbon dioxide emissions.
DOE wants to address this issue by focusing grant funding on the development of technologies that can create energy-saving windows that insulate like walls and foster energy-efficiency in homes and buildings.
