EGP has secured right to enter into power supply contracts with the South African utility Eskom for 425MW of wind power projects, while Scatec Solar has been selected to build, own and operate three solar projects with a combined capacity of around 258MW.
As part of the contracts awarded in REIPPP, EGP will construct three wind projects in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces.
The wind projects including 142MW Oyster Bay, 141MW Nxuba and 142MW Karusa will require a total investment of around €500m.
The Oyster Bay and Nxuba projects will become operational in 2017, while Karusa will be online in 2018.
When operational, the three projects will generate around 1,560GW of clean energy annually.
While, Scatec Solar will begin construction on the solar projects in early 2017.
To be located on directly adjacent sites, the three projects when combined will represent one of the largest solar parks, claims Scatec Solar.
Scatec Solar will own 42% stake in the three projects and Norfund – the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries- will hold 18%, while the remaining stake will be owned by a Trust channeling dividends from the projects to economic development initiatives in the local communities.
