The deployment is part of Consumers Energy’s grid and meter modernization program for its 1.8 million electric customers in its service territory.

The installation of the cellular-based metering system is scheduled to begin in Muskegon County in August 2012 and will be completed in phases by 2019.

Details of the contract have not been disclosed.

Consumers Energy also will monitor the installation of communications modules on approximately 600,000 gas meters in the utility’s service areas.

SmartSynch’s technology is a two-way communications system which provides customers with detailed information about their energy usage.

It allows the customers to better manage their energy use and their bills and also provides faster power outage identification and restoration.
