China has began site clearance for the third stage of the Three Gorges reservoir on the Yangtze river.

The clearance is part of a project to increase the storage capacity for the reservoir with the water level expected to rise to 156m after the flood season in 2006.

In this phase, local governments are required to clear away sites of potential pollution that may affect the reservoir, including buildings such as factories and houses.
