The West Tennessee solar facility is part of the Volunteer State Solar Initiative (VSSI), created to benefit the Tennessee economy by using federal dollars.
Under the VSSI, $31m in ARRA funds will be used to install the West Tennessee solar farm in Haywood County, and the Tennessee Solar Institute will also use $23.5m to issue grants from the solar opportunity fund.
The University of Tennessee Research Foundation is managing the solar farm development.
To date, Signal Energy completed design and engineering for the facility and is currently finishing site work.
The West Tennessee facility’s initial 5MW installed capacity is expected to be complete in early 2012.
Upion completion, the West Tennessee facility will occupy 35 acres of land next to Interstate 40 in Haywood County.
The solar facility comprises of 21,000 silicon-based photovoltaic modules, that produce about 7,000,000kWh of electricity annually.
