Construction of the substations is expected to improve power grid resilience in the country. These substations will transmit electricity from the 4.8GW Burullus power plant, which is considered to be the largest combined cycle station in the world.
It will be located at Kaft El Sheikh Governorate and will produce enough electricity to be supplied to about 15 million Egyptian homes.
The two new substations, which will be located at Samanoud and Aboul Matameer, will regulate the electricity being transmitted from the power plant to the homes and to the businesses and industries located in the Delta region.
As part of the contract, Siemens will design, engineer, supply, construct, install and commission two new 500/220kV substations. And, it will be delivered on a turnkey basis. For the substations, Siemens will supply its gas insulated switchgear (GIS), power transformers, control systems along with protection and telecommunications equipment.
Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company chairman Gamal Abdel Rahim said: “To enable more resilient, efficient and reliable power systems, Egypt needs to enhance the country’s transmission lines to accommodate the increase in power generation capacity.
“This is why the EETC has been redefining the conventional approaches to upgrade the grid infrastructure across the country.”
