The certification, which includes a 25-year lifespan, marks another step forward in development of the SWT-6.0-154 direct-drive machine.
DNV GL specialists were given access to Siemens’ facilities in Denmark, and to Hunterston, UK, where a prototype of the turbine is deployed.
The certification process was focused on the turbine design and its manufacturing, installation and commissioning processes.
Siemens said the SWT-6.0-154 machine, which has a 154m rotor, will help reduce the cost of energy and deliver offshore wind power for about 6,000 European households.
The company noted that with a tower head mass of 360 tons, the new machine is about one-third lighter when compared to other systems.
The turbine offers enhanced economic viability in entire project phases, from assembly to transport, foundations and installation, as well as operation.
Wind power and energy service are part of Siemens’ environmental portfolio and about 43% of the company’s revenues come from green products and solutions.
