A Siemens-led consortium including Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been awarded a turnkey contract for a 900 MW steam power plant and an associated desalination facility by Shuaibah Water and Electricity Company (SWEC), based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The order, for the largest independent water and power project (IWPP) worldwide, is worth approximately €1.8 billion.

The Shuaibah plant will be located about 110 km South of Jeddah. Siemens’ scope of supply comprises three steam turbine-generator units each rated at 400 MW, along with the associated electrical and instrumentation & control systems. The three oil-fired units are due for commissioning in late 2009. Additionally, the desalination plant supplied by Doosan will provide about 880,000 m3 of fresh water for the cities of Mecca, Jeddah, Taif and Al-Baha.
