The company will initially build a facility featuring 400,000 photovoltaic cells in an area of 200ha, to generate 100MW of power capacity.
Over an unspecified period of time, this capacity is expected to be significantly increased to 200MW.
Shumba managing director Mashale Phumaphi was quoted by Reuters as saying: "We see solar energy as complimentary to our coal-based energy projects."
The company officials earlier said that copper mines which are under construction in the Kalahari copper belt will utilize the power generated from the solar facility. Currently, yhe mines are not connected to the national grid.
Recently, Cupric Canyon Capital, a private equity firm backed by a unit of Barclays, proposed its plan to built copper mine in Kalahari copper belt in Botswana in 2016. The mine will be located near the proposed solar power station.
Shumba Coal focuses on the acquisition and development of highly prospective coal exploration licenses in the country.
