While 30 of the petrol stations will be newly-built by Shell, the remaining number will be sourced through the company’s pending acquisition of Conoco Jet Malaysia, after which Shell will rebrand 44 ProJet stations to the Shell name, Bernama.com revealed.

The publication cited Datuk Mohzani Wahab, Shell Malaysia’s managing director, as saying that the new stations will be established by the end of 2007, while the rebranding initiative will be completed within two months.

According to the Malaysia Star, Shell Malaysia expects the initiative to significantly boost its performance in its domestic market. However, the publication reported Datuk Mohzani Wahab as saying that the scheme is not expected to fully impact upon the company’s business until 2008.

This year, we want to protect our current market share of 33% to 35%. Next year is when we plan to grow it, Datuk Mohzani Wahab said, as cited by the Malaysia Star.

In the long term, the company hopes to leverage both the acquisition of Conoco Jet Malaysia and the expanded fuel retail network to consolidate its Malaysian footprint.
