Royal Dutch Shell has defended the environmental standards of its Argentina operations after authorities in the South American country ordered the closure of a Shell refinery in the Dock Sud area of Buenos Aires on environmental grounds, Agence France-Presse has reported.

All of our operations were and still are conducted according to the local legislation and strengthened Shell standards, a company spokesman said, as cited by the French news agency. Shell Argentina is analyzing the documentation received and the allegations made by the environmental secretariat. Our response to them will be provided soon.

The main objection lodged against Shell’s refinery was that there was pollution in the soil specimens near the refinery and that the facility was using water from the river plate estuary without the necessary approvals.
