The $170m solar park is in line with the government’s efforts to ensure energy sustainability and reduce energy bill by increasing use of renewable energy sources, reported Jordan News Agency (Petra).
The project will feature 681,360 solar panels to generate about 160GWH annually, while eliminating 90,000 tons of CO2 gas emissions.
The project is expected to create around 500 jobs during construction and up to 40 new jobs on commencing operations.
Shams Ma’an board of directors chairman Karim Kawar was quoted as saying: "Shams Ma’an Project will be a pioneer in the field of renewable energy projects in Jordan, as the year 2015 will represent a point of commitment for all of us to finding practical solutions to the problem of energy in Jordan."
Construction work is planned to be completed by mid-2016 with plans to commission the project in September same year.
