Under the project, Australia-based Senex Energy will drill the well to a total depth of 3,175m, while currently a depth of 751m has been reached using Weatherford Rig 826.
Located 1.2km southwest of Paning-1 well, the Paning-2 was drilled by Delhi Petroleum as a conventional gas exploration well in 1980.
It is the first unconventional gas exploration well to be drilled in the region to provide important information about the potential of gas reserves in the tight sands and deep coal seams of this region.
Senex Energy will drill the well to test the domal formation up-dip of Paning-1 at the top of the Patchawarra Formation, which is spread across 36km².
As part of the exploration, tight sandstones in Toolachee, Epsilon and Patchawarra Formations, and thick coal seams in the Toolachee Formation will be the main targets.
