Sellafield Ltd has marked the completion of a new Encapsulated Product Store 3 (EPS3), which will be used for aboveground storage of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) at the site.

The store, which took over eight years to build and more than 2 million man hours, used over 32,000 cubic metres of concrete and 7,300 tonnes of reinforcing steel. It is capable of storing over 29,000 waste drums.

Sellafield Ltd worked with Laing O’Rourke, and other supply chain companies to deliver the project.

“EPS3 will receive ILW arising from the sites continuing reprocessing and high hazard removal operations, as part of decommissioning a number of priority facilities," said Steve Bostock, director Spent Fuel Management at Sellafield.

The building will be used to store waste pending final disposal in a deep geological facility.
