Contractors Ross-shire Engineering will carry out the upgrades worth £1m, which will include the refurbishment or replacement of equipment such as screens, storm tanks and the construction of a new pumping station.
Scottish Water west area wastewater asset manager Gary Caig said the capital maintenance project at Erskine WWTW will ensure the company continues to help protect and improve the natural environment in the area.
"By refurbishing and replacing existing equipment there we will ensure we continue to meet stringent government regulations and provide a quality service to the community now and for many years to come," Caig said.
Scottish Water construction manager Martin Evans said all of the work in the project will be contained on the site of the waste water treatment works and there should be no disruption to normal service.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Erskine WWTW provides services for about 115,000 customers in Erskine, Linwood, Johnstone, Bridge of Weir, Howwood, Bishopton, Inchinnan, Kilbarchan, Kilmacolm, Houston, Crosslee, Quarrier’s Village and surrounding areas and is situated on the edge of the River Clyde.
