Wind farm

To be located 5km south of Strathaven, the wind farm will consist of 26 turbines.

The Kype Muir wind farm will provide enough electricity for about 49,000 homes in the area and generate about £4m for to the local community over its operational lifetime.

Ewing said after completion, the wind farm will save several tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

"The Kype Muir wind farm will create jobs both in its construction and during its lifetime," Ewing added.

"Wind farms, like Kype Muir, provide considerable benefits to their local community and play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100 per cent of electricity demand generated from renewables."

BBC reported that Ewing’s approval for the new development came at the same time when the environmental body Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) published fresh guidance on the location and design of wind farms.

SNH policy manager for renewables Brendan Turvey was quoted by BBC as saying that "We want to see wind farms which are well designed in the right locations. This guidance sets out the key principles to achieve this."

"As more wind farms are developed in Scotland it is important that new sites are well designed to minimise cumulative effects on our landscapes," Turvey said.
