The smart meter technology will enable SCE residential and small-business customers to take advantage of new programs and services in the near future.
Antelope Valley communities will get access to the same smart meter-enabled programs and services in the months following installations.
The traditional mechanical meters will be replaced by Edison SmartConnect meters, which are digital, secure, two-way communicating devices.
Earlier this year, SCE began introducing programs and services that enable customers to make better-informed decisions about energy use.
SCE Edison SmartConnect program director Ken Devore said over the past several years, the company has focused on developing an industry-leading smart meter program, including extensive testing of its smart meters and associated systems to ensure their quality and performance.
"Smart meters will empower our customers to become better managers of their electricity usage through new tools, programs and services that will help them save energy and money, and help protect the environment," Devore said.
SCE, in collaboration with Corix Utilities, will perform most of the smart meter installations.
