The solar panels have been unveiled on April 20, 2009. SAP expects the system to reduce its carbon emissions by 154 metric tons annually. It will also eliminate the peak-load energy consumption of the company’s regional computing center on the electrical supply grid during daylight hours, providing both environmental and financial benefits.
The clean energy generated by the solar panel installation complements the recent commitment by SAP to purchase energy derived from renewable sources from PaloAltoGreen, the renewable-energy program of the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU). SAP plans to purchase 2,628,000 kWh annually from CPAU-the equivalent of the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine.
The use of renewable energy supports SAP’s recently announced aggressive carbon reduction targets and its long-term strategic focus on sustainability in both its own operations and through delivering solutions that support its customers’ sustainable business practices.
