Under the contract, signed with Shanghai Electric Group, Saft will provide SBLE nickel-based batteries to provide backup power for critical safety and control systems at the 225MW Khulna combined cycle power plant (CCCP) project.

Saft Industrial Battery Group Division general manager Xavier Delacroix said: "The Khulna project for Shanghai Electric Group is an important step that continues Saft’s growth within China’s industrial standby sector as well as maintaining our already strong position in the international power plant market."

"This success is based on our broad range of well-proven battery products that meet every backup need, from high power to high energy."

Deliveries of the batteries are scheduled in mid-2015.

With a life cycle of 20 years or even longer, the SBLE nickel-based block batteries can operate over a wide range of temperatures, while resisting electrical abuse, shock and vibration and require only basic maintenance.

With a current total installed power generation capacity of 10,600MW, Bangladesh has prepared its Power System Master Plan 2010 (PSMP) a part of its objective of ‘electricity for all’.
