The system will be part of a hybrid micro-grid that will provide energy to a community situated 50 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Canada.

Saft will install the system at the Colville Lake power station in June 2015. The Colville Lake community is presently experiencing power outages as its temperatures drop to -50°C in winter and reach 35°C in summer.

The cold temperature package design of Saft enables for a complete BESS system in a 20-foot container that combat extreme arctic environments down to -50°C.

The deal also requires Saft to develop and deploy one Intensium Max 20M Medium Power Li-ion battery container with 232kWh of energy and a 200kW Power Conditioning System from ABB.

Apart from design and installation, Saft’s advanced modelling capabilities helped NTPC identify the optimum size for their expanded solar array.

Saft’s system features a modular set-up that can be extended to integrate wind-energy and double the energy rating of the battery in the future.

NTPC president and CEO Emanuel DaRosa said: "This is NTPC’s first project of this nature, and the first solar installation that has the capacity to generate about 30 percent of the community’s demand.

"It was imperative to find a partner that could provide a long-term energy storage system capable of withstanding the Territories’ extreme rugged environment."
