Safi Energy is a consortium between Gdf Suez (France), Mitsui & Co. (Japan) and Nareva (Morocco).
Construction on the $2.6bn Safi coal-fired power plant will commence by Daewoo Engineering & Construction (South Korea) while Safi Energy will be responsible for operation and maintenance.
Featuring ultra-supercritical technology to enable significant CO2 reductions and lower fuel costs, the project will be built as part of Morocco’s national strategic plan to address its growing demand for electricity at the lowest possible cost while reducing environmental impact.
Expected to be completed by 2018, the project will produce 2×693MW of electricity, which will be sold to ONEE under a 30-years power purchase agreement.
In addition to contributing to the social and economic development of Morocco, the power project will help further development of the energy and port infrastructure such as the new Safi port.
