The Southern African Development Community (SADC) wants to invest $843 million in 42 energy development projects, but it has so far only raised $626 million. A further $29 million is under negotiation with donors, leaving a shortfall of $188 million.

Electricity sector projects are at the top of the list of investment priorities. SADC has selected 20 electricity projects which have a combined cost of $115 million.

The ultimate aim of SADC, which is now 18 years old, is to integrate the various countries of southern Africa. The 14 members of the organization are Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Swaziland, Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Seychelles and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
