The application outlines RWE npower’s proposals for a 2,000MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station which would be built on the site of former Willington A and B power stations.
Mike Peel, project manager of RWE npower, said: “As some of the country’s existing power stations are coming to the end of their operational lives, there is an increasing need for new power generation from a diverse range of fuel sources. Gas is an important part of this mix and we believe that our Willington site could be a very strong option for new generating capacity.
“To ensure the local community has been kept up to date with our plans, we have held two rounds of public exhibitions in the local area over the last six months. We expect the Government to take around twelve months to consider our application, during which time they will carry out further consultation with South Derbyshire District Council, Derbyshire County Council and other statutory consultees.”
The company said that a new power station at Willington will make a contribution to ongoing energy supply and bring a number of benefits for the local community. In addition, the proximity of the Willington site to a national grid connection, the River Trent, the railway and the trunk road network makes it a suitable location for power generation.
