RWE has announced plans to build a 1,600 MW coal-fired twin unit at an existing site in Ensdorf, Saarland.

The €2 billion plant is due to come on stream in 2012. Another project is currently at the planning stage for the Emsland region. This involves an 876 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant with a natural gas pipe storage facility located at the existing site in Lingen. The plant is due to come on stream as early as 2009 and requires an investment of around €500 million.

The projects form part of a €10 billion investment programme announced by the company for generation development.

Meanwhile, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) RWE Transportnetz Strom of Germany and TenneT of the Netherlands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a new 380 kV line between Doetinchem in Holland and Wesel in Germany. The 60km line will increase transmission capacity between the two grids by around 25 to 50% and is expected to cost some €70 million.
