The facility is equipped with five generating units which have a combined generation capacity of over 2,000 MW.

RWE npower group CEO Volker Beckers said, "This addition means RWE npower now has the largest and most efficient gas portfolio as well as the largest fleet of renewable energy technologies in the country."

Minister of State for Energy John Hayes MP said, "This billion-pound investment will play a vital role in our energy mix, providing a flexible, reliable energy supply for homes and businesses across the country."

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb said, "I have no doubt that this facility will play a vital role in maintaining the UK’s energy supplies for the future and make its own contribution to creating economic prosperity for Wales."

In 2009, the UK government had granted planning permission for the station, which is expected to power 3.5 million homes in the region.

The power plant which took three years to construct also received a permit from the Environment Agency in November 2011.
