The €2.6bn coal-fired plant has 43% efficiency rate and each unit of the plant can produce over 1,000MW of clean electricity.
BoA 2&3 is expected to produce about 16bn kilowatts of power every year which will be sufficient to power more than 3.4m households. The new plant is displacing older plants.
RWE CEO Peter Terium said lignite-fired plant are highly flexible and can produce electricity 24/7 unlike wind and solar sources.
"BoA 2&3 is an important element of our strategy, for modern coal and gas-fired power stations are indispensable," Terium added.
Germany Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier said, "The new power plant is an impressive example of how the high levels of efficiency of modern coal- and gas-fired power plants not only help to reduce carbon emissions but can also make an outstanding contribution to the success of energy industry transformation."
RWE is a German based electricity and gas company.
