Russia’s Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant has ordered the design and certification of TUK transportation containers for shipping nuclear material by all modes of transport, including air. They would hold uranium-containing materials enriched up to 20% uranium 235 intended for foreign research reactors, state nuclear corporation Rosatom’s procurement website says. Russia’s lack of domestically made containers has meant leasing them on unprofitable terms, Rosatom said. The domestically made TUK is to replace the imported cask TN BGC1 for deliveries of uranium-containing materials (powder, granules etc.), including small test batches. The initial (maximum) contract cost was set up at RUB31m ($480,206). The work includes the development of the TUK detailed design; development, manufacture and testing of components; the manufacture of five lead specimens of TUK and their certification in Russia.
