Russia has suspended the intergovernmental agreement with the USA on cooperation in nuclear and energy-related research and development, Interfax reported on 5 October, quoting an instruction published on the Russian government website. "Actions taken by the USA over the imposition of sanctions on Russia have directly impacted on the areas of cooperation covered in the agreement," the explanatory note to the government instruction said. It mentioned the US decision to suspend nuclear energy cooperation with Russia in April 2014, following the annexation of Crimea.

The note also said that cooperation could be resumed "when this becomes justified in terms of the overall context of relations with the USA". The Agreement between the Government of the USA and the Government of the Russian Federation on Cooperation in Nuclear- and Energy-Related Scientific Research and Development was signed in Vienna in September 2013. This is the second nuclear-related deal with the USA that Russia has suspended in recent days. On 3 October, it announced the suspension of the agreement on the disposition and management of excess weapons-grade plutonium, blaming "unfriendly steps" by Washington for the decision.
