Under the terms of the deal with Egypt Electricity, Rosatom will build a nuclear power plant (NPP), which will feature four units each with capacity of 1200MW, in Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast in the northwest of the country.
RIA Novosti cited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as saying: "It is the most important document fixing parameters of the first Egyptian nuclear power plant that will be built in compliance with the Russian technologies."
The nuclear power plant is planned to be constructed within 12 years.
Sisi was quoted by Reuters as saying: "This was a long dream for Egypt, to have a peaceful nuclear program to produce electricity."
In February 2015, Rusatom and Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plant Authority signed an agreement on the development of the project intended to determine the nuclear power plant specifications and key areas of cooperation.
Rosatom CEO Sergey Kiriyenko said: "The nuclear power plant project in Dabaa will become the largest joint project between Russia and Egypt since Aswan dam project; this is sincerely new page in history of Russian-Egyptian intergovernmental relations.
"First NPP will make Egypt regional technological leader and the region’s only country with NPP 3+ Gen technology."
Additionally, the Russian Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian regulatory body for nuclear and radiological safety.
The MoU is intended to facilitate further nuclear infrastructure development.
In an effort to diversify energy sources, Egypt is also considering developing solar and wind projects to generate about 4,300MW of power in the next three years.
