The new reactors at the nuclear station in Lianyungang will be built under the inter-governmental agreement signed on 06 December 2012.
This bilateral protocol was signed in the presence of Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev.
Construction work for the plant’s second phase, which will see third and fourth reactors being installed, will begin in December 2012, reports RIA Novosti.
Rosatom civilian nuclear power corporation head Sergei Kiriyenko stated, "At the end of 2012, the first concrete will be poured for the foundation of the third and fourth reactors."
In addition, Kiriyenko said the nuclear power plant’s site is capable of accommodating as many as eight reactors.
Russia-based Atomstroyexport and the Jiangsu nuclear power corporation signed a contract to construct the nuclear plant in 1997.
During the first stage of Tianwan, two power units with VVER-1000 reactors were installed. These units were put into commercial operation in 2007.
