The Bushehr-2 nuclear power plant, which will be jointly developed by Rosatom and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), will feature two reactors, each with a power generation capacity of 1,000MW.
Press TV cited AEOI head Ali Akbar Salehi as saying: "We are expecting our second nuclear power plant to go online in a matter of eight years."
The project is a part of an agreement signed between Russia and Iran in 2014 for the construction of the second stage of Bushehr.
The dealincludes development of two nuclear power blocks, and also has an option for expansion to four power blocks.
Earlier this year, Russia has also signed a separate deal with Iran to construct four power units with VVER reactors, the Russian version of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), on the site of Bushehr plant as well as four similar power units at another site in the country.
The agreements come in line with Iran’s efforts to develop 20 nuclear power plants to help generate 20,000MW of power by 2025.
Tehran is currently operating 1,000MW nuclear power plant, which is currently under a two-year warranty period with technical support being provided by Russian, in Bushehr.
