Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) said that its new 5,80,000 barrels per day (Bpd) refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat is performing beyond expectations and has overtaken RIL's adjacent old refinery in processing crude oil, Press Trust of India reported. The 29 million tonnes per year new unit is operating at 114% of its rated capacity and is processing more volumes of crude oil than even the older refinery.

The new unit sits next to the old 6,60,000 bpd (or 33 million tonnes per year) refinery.

In September 2009, RIL commissioned all units of the new only-for-exports refinery which has a combined crude processing capacity of 1.24 million bpd.

Petroleum Ministry data showed that the old plant in August 2009 operated at 106.6% of its rated capacity to turn 2.988 million tonnes of crude oil into fuel. During April-August 2009, it operated at 98.3% of the capacity, turning 13.595 million tonnes of crude into petroleum products.

In August 2009, RIL had begun an 85,000 bpd alkylation unit to begin producing petrol meeting the stringent US and European standards.
