Initial activities include construction of site infrastructure, roadworks and water and power connections.

Additionally, the company has also undertaken drilling of geotechnical boreholes across the initial mining area.

Boikarabelo has now been classified as an operating mine site, the company said in a statement.

In December 2012, the company had announced a term sheet agreement for debt with a mandated group of financiers to fund the development of the Boikarabelo mine.

The independent technical, market, legal and other consultants engaged on behalf of the financiers have completed the due diligence investigations, the company said.

Resource Generation will develop the mine in two phases, wherein the first phase will produce 12 million tons of coal annually.

Scheduled to begin in 2018, Phase 2 would ramp up production to 20 million tons of coal a year.
