The proposed biomass power plant will:
Generate clean, green electricity for the equivalent of 150,000 homes every year
Cut emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas, by more than 300,000 tonnes annually
Help reduce the impacts of climate change now and for future generations
Provide secure and reliable power through the use of tried-and-tested technology and an abundant and renewable fuel source
Create green collar jobs for S E Northumberland, providing opportunities for local
contractors during the construction phase and permanent jobs for engineers and other disciplines during operation
Use the Port for the transport of the fuel, helping to secure its economic future
Contribute to the growth of the North East as a hub for renewable energy technology
The North East region is well-placed to reap the economic as well as the environmental benefits of the growth in renewable energy. By 2020 over 20% of the North East’s electricity requirements could be met by reliable and clean renewable energy technologies. In South East Northumberland a number of
private and public sector initiatives are under way that together will drive the growth in the low-carbon economy and bring secure jobs to the region.
